Let us get on with delivering growth, say cities

Cities should be trusted to get on with delivering economic growth while parliament remains distracted by Brexit, according to a group representing the UK’s main cities outside London.

A Core Cities UK report is calling on the government to invest to stimulate inclusive growth and support the public services that deliver it, devolve further powers to cities and trust local people “to get on with the job”.

Core Cities UK chair Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “To achieve a positive Brexit and address social and economic challenges, the UK needs its cities to perform like never before.

“To raise living standards, productivity and create high quality places that foster strong communities.”

Among the report’s detailed proposals were: bespoke city housing deals; a 'whole system approach' to skills, education and employment involving local politicians and business leaders; inclusion of Core Cities in international trade missions; and immediate government investment in 'shovel ready' infrastructure projects.

Core Cities UK comprises: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.
