Professor Julian Le Grand, who has advised the government on the creation of public sector mutuals and has undertaken a review of children’s services in Birmingham, is among the public sector figurers recognised in the New Year’s honours list.

Le Grand, who also served as an advisor to the Tony Blair when he was prime minister, was recognised for his work in a review of children’s social care services at Doncaster Council.

He was also recently involved in the Barker Review into social care, which recommended some tax increases to pay for making more social care provision free at the point of use.

Others public servants recognised in the honours list include Edinburgh City Council chief executive Sue Bruce, who has been made a dame, and London Borough of Hillingon deputy chief executive Jean Palmer, who has been awarded an OBE for services to local government.

Paul Silk, who chaired a commission on devolution in Wales that recommended boosting the powers of the Welsh Assembly, also received a knighthood.

Professor Norman Williams, the president of the Royal College of Surgeons, has been knighted, while Eileen Sills, the chief nurse and chief operating officer at Guy’s and St Thomas’ foundation trust, received a damehood.
