The Welsh government has agreed a pay deal with trade unions for NHS staff in Wales.

The agreement, the first Wales-only pay deal, includes a 1% rise for NHS staff, excluding doctors, dentists and some very senior managers.

Under the two-year deal, a 1% consolidated uplift will be applied to all staff on Agenda for Change pay scales from April 1 2015.

Directly employed staff will get the Living Wage from January 1, while all Agenda for Change staff will get a lump sum payment.

An NHS workforce commission will also be established to consider a broad range of workforce issues.

Welsh health and social services minister Mark Drakeford said the ‘made-in-Wales’ pay deal demonstrated the government’s commitment to staff against a backdrop of severe budget cuts.

‘This is an excellent example of working collaboratively and co-production and I am pleased that in Wales we have been able to avoid significant strike action by agreeing a mutual position — this is a credit to all parties,’ he said.

Dawn Bowden, Unison Wales head of health, said that the settlement was an improvement on the previous offer.

‘Clearly this agreement does not make up for the real-terms loss that NHS workers have suffered in recent years, but we hope we can build on this settlement in the future,’ she said.
