The UK government has launched a short consultation on devolving stamp duty to the National Assembly for Wales in advance of its formal response to the Silk Commission proposals on greater financial autonomy for Wales.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said the outcome of the consultation would inform Westminster’s response to Silk.

He said: ‘This is an important final step to enable us to respond to the Silk Commission’s recommendations. There is a very strong case for devolving fiscal and economic levers to the Welsh government, but it is right that we fully understand the potential impacts so that we can ensure that the decisions we take are right for Wales and for the UK as a whole.’

The decision to consult has been taken because of the populous border between Wales and England and the potential impact devolution of stamp duty would have for the construction industry and housing market.

Welsh Secretary David Jones urged all interested parties to respond.
