Liverpool city mayor Joe Anderson has been awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in recognition of his services to local government and the community.

Anderson, who was previously leader of Liverpool City Council, said he was very surprised and humbled to receive the honour. ‘I regard it as much for the people of the city as for myself, and think it is a recognition of the many great achievements Liverpool has made in recent years, and for all the determined and talented people of the city,’ he said.

Other local government figures to be recognised included Bernadette Malone, chief executive of Perth & Kinross Council, Jonathan Phillips, former director of adult social services at Calderdale Council, and Matthew Lugg, director of environment and transport services at Leicestershire County Council. All received the MBE.

There were OBEs for Jackie Westlake, leader of the Big Society team at the Department for Communities and Local Government, and for David Gilbert, director of regeneration at Carmarthenshire County Council.

Among the civil servants to be honoured were Paul Jenkins, chief executive and permanent secretary at the Treasury Solicitor’s department, who was knighted. Several distinguished public servants were made Companions of the Order of the Bath. They included: Miriam Rosen, who served as chief inspector of schools until recently; Peter Lewis, chief executive of the Crown Prosecution Service; Edgar Jardine, interim chief executive at the Northern Ireland Policing Board; and Alan Shannon, permanent secretary at Northern Ireland’s Department for Social Development.
