Twenty-nine parish councils in England have been reprimanded by auditors for failing to submit their accounts.

The district auditor has issued public interest reports for each of the councils – an unprecedented number.

Failing to produce an annual return for the 2010/11 financial year was a dereliction of an ‘important statutory duty’, the reports say.

District auditor Jackie Bellard said: ‘People in these parishes have the right to know how their local taxes have been used by their councils. Despite my repeated requests, these councils have failed to submit their annual returns. This should not happen again.’

The 29 parishes, which are located in eight counties, are:

Beeston, Ollerton with Marthall, Siddington (Cheshire)

Altarnum, Davidstow, Michaelstow, Warbstow (Cornwall)

Alkmonton & Hungry Bentley, Ballidon & Bradbourne (Derbyshire)

Ashreigny, Clyst Hydon, East Anstey, Mamhead, Shaugh Prior, Stoke Rivers, Templeton, Washfield (Devon)

Manston, Molash, Sellindge (Kent)

Cadney cum Howsham (Lincolnshire)

Ramshorn, Wiggington & Hopwas (Staffordshire)

Atwick, Bewholme, Bishop Burton, Burton Pidsea, Skipsea, Welton (Yorkshire)
