Stockport accountant Judith Savage has once again topped the poll in the CIPFA council elections for 2011/12.

The results, published by CIPFA today, show that Savage, a management accountant at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, gained 998 votes. She was followed by Claire Gravil, senior finance manager at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, who won 960 votes. Tyneside-based accountant Jane Cuthbertson, who is on secondment to BT Tyneside, came third with 927 votes. Gravil and Cuthbertson also came second and third respectively in last year’s poll.

Two new members were elected to council: Paul Dransfield, strategic director of corporate resources at Birmingham City Council, and Sarah Howard, a partner at Grant Thornton. Howard joins the Audit Commission’s Caroline Al-Beyerty as one of the council’s two representatives from the statutory external audit sector.

The council members will formally take up office following CIPFA’s annual general meeting on July 5. Their first full meeting is scheduled for July 7, with four more to follow over the course of the year.

Turnout was just 14.1%, significantly down on last year’s level of 21.3%. This was the first year in which the majority of votes were cast online, with postal votes returned only by those members who opted not to receive electronic notices from CIPFA.

CIPFA said its nominations committee would be working with Electoral Reform Services to explore ways of encouraging greater participation in future ballots.
