The Welsh Government needs to do more on carbon reduction, assembly members have said.
A report from the Welsh Assembly’s sustainability committee
found that different government departments often had conflicting policies and
priorities on environmental issues. And while some departments were dedicated
to a sustainability policy, for others it was much less of a priority.
Sustainability committee chair Kirsty Williams chair said: ‘We’re still concerned at the lack of joined-up approaches between government departments and agencies, which leads to confused and conflicting messages regarding carbon reduction.
‘We want to see clearer leadership and a consistent message when it comes to our climate and we want the public to be able find out all the information they need to contribute towards a sustainable future, from one source.’
Williams added that there was a ‘concerning lack of data’ to demonstrate the effect government policies were having on carbon reduction.
‘We would urge the Welsh Government to collect and publish
clear and accurate statistics showing how Wales is contributing towards
sustaining our planet for future generations,’ she said.
The report, published on October 30, recommended that the Welsh Government produce a full costing, both in terms of the financial implications and the amounts of carbon of the measures it intends to implement through its carbon reduction strategy.
