The salaries of thousands of civil servants were published for the first time today by the government.

The name, job title and salary of all those working in government departments and earning over £82,900 were made public on the Cabinet Office and Downing Street websites. This represents those at director level and above.

The salaries of those at deputy director level were published, but have been anonymised.

Previously only the details of civil servants earning more than £150,000 had been put in the public domain.

Organisational charts detailing the structure of all Whitehall departments, called ‘organograms’, were also put on the websites.

Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude said the move was part of ‘the ongoing drive to make government more accountable’.

He added: ‘For the first time anyone who wants to can see at a glance how many people work in any team in any department, giving unrivalled insight into the way government works.’

The organogram for the Department of Communities and Local Government shows all reporting lines from directors and deputy directors up to acting (and outgoing) permanent secretary Irene Lucas.

At the moment there are still gaps in the data, with further information to be added to the charts over the coming weeks. Job descriptions for senior roles and team functions will also be included.
