Fire authorities have recommended the government scraps a delayed £380m call centre scheme, saying it was ‘no longer feasible’ due to the squeeze on public spending.
The Firecontrol project, which aimed to establish regional control centres for 999 calls to fire services was first mooted in 2004. Parts of the scheme, which will not be fully operational until late 2012, are now two years behind schedule.
On September 18, the Local Government Association’s fire services management committee voted to oppose the centres.
Committee chair Brian Coleman said the project was ‘fast becoming a white elephant’.
