A new chief adviser on construction will support the public sector to procure best value services, ministers have announced.

The government appointee will chair the new Construction Category Board, which will oversee the public sector’s efficiency in procuring for construction projects. He or she will also be responsible for ensuring that policy in the building sector is effectively co-ordinated.

The role was announced following a consultation exercise and is part of the Operational Efficiency Programme launched in July this year. It will be an independent position but the adviser will report to ministers at the Treasury and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Ian Pearson, economics minister, said: ‘The chief construction adviser will help to ensure that government secures maximum value for money in its procurement of construction and thus support the aims of the Operational Efficiency Programme.’

Business leaders welcomed the move. John McDonough, chair of the CBI’s construction council, said: ‘The council would like to see the reviewing of current capital programmes made an explicit part of the work of the Chief Construction Adviser, as the ability to troubleshoot must be a key part of the role... This will help ensure government projects run smoothly and deliver good value.’
