Controversial plans to redevelop Abergavenny’s historic 150-year-old cattle market are on hold again after Monmouthshire Council announced it was dropping the chosen developer.

A supermarket, retail park and cinema had been scheduled for the site, but the council was unable to agree contract changes to the £11m project. It had received 3,500 letters objecting to the plans. Most of cited fears that the development would have a negative effect on the existing local shopping area.

The council said on August 3 that after ‘lengthy negotiations on an extension to their contract, it has decided not to continue with Henry Boot as the developer of the cattle market’.

Steve Greenslade, corporate director for the council, said the recession ‘had an effect on this scheme as it has on many others throughout the country’.
