A second council in Wales is switching off its streetlights to save money. Ceredigion Council is following neighbouring Powys, which saved £225,000 last year with a controversial switch-off.

The council has 6,193 lamps and its street light
budget faces a £50,000 shortfall. Ceredigion plans to turn off the lamps between midnight and 5am.

Work will start on August 3 and is expected to finish in March 2010.

Areas will be tackled in alphabetical order, with the exception of Aberystwyth, where work will be staggered to avoid disrupting traffic during the peak tourist and Christmas periods.
