Thousands of homes are likely to be pushed into fuel poverty by rising unemployment and energy prices, according to the government’s Fuel Poverty Advisory Group.

In a report on July 12, the FPAG said 4 million households in England were already in fuel poverty – defined as spending more than 10% of income on energy. Average domestic fuel bills have increased by 125% over the past five years, the group said.

‘If the government is serious in its aim to end fuel poverty, it needs to do much more to help the most vulnerable households,’ said Jonathan Stearn of watchdog Consumer Focus.
