England’s rivers, lakes and canals are to get a facelift through new government funding. Environment minister Huw Irranca-Davies said an extra £10m would be invested over the next year in improving the quality of water, which would help flora and fauna to flourish.

Environment minister Huw Irranca-Davies said an extra £10m would be invested over the next year in improving the quality of water, which would help flora and fauna to flourish.

Currently only 21% of water sites have been given Good Ecological Status under European criteria.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is to work with the Environment Agency to restore wildlife habitats in rivers, protect wetlands and monitor pollution.
