The Local Government Association has welcomed a new fast-track scheme for training people who wish to change careers to become social workers.

LGA vice-chair Sir Jeremy Beecham said the scheme, which was announced by Children’s Secretary Ed Balls, was ‘a further acknowledgement of what council leaders have been calling for’.

He added: ‘What is needed is a long-term drive to raise the status and recruitment of social workers for years to come, so that the best... staff are on the front line protecting vulnerable children, and want to remain in those positions.’
