The Audit Commission is to take on twice as many new graduates as last year as an investment in the future, while many private sector firms are cutting trainee numbers.

The public sector financial watchdog will be recruiting for its 2011 intake this summer, and says 90 jobs will be available, up from 45 a year ago. The commission describes the accountancy trainees, who will work towards the CIPFA qualification, as the ‘lifeblood’ of its workforce.

Chief executive Steve Bundred said: ‘We’re investing in young people as our future audit workforce. The Audit Commission wants to train a new, young generation of auditors across England who are committed to delivering world-class public audit.’

Experience would be gained ‘in a time of significant financial challenge, which has put public sector financial management under the microscope and on the front pages like never before’, Bundred added.
