A medical ‘fit note’ is to replace the current workplace sick note.
The fit note will help people get the best possible advice about staying in work or getting back to work as quickly as possible.
Work and pensions minister Bill McKenzie said: ‘Employers tell us that managing sickness absence can be a challenge. This is compounded by a “sick note” system that makes sickness absence a black and white issue — either you are unfit for work or you are not.’
The fit note is being developed with the help of health professionals and trade unions and will be rolled out across Britain from spring 2010.
