Councillors at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham have agreed to accept a recommendation from an independent remuneration panel for a freeze in their allowances.

This year the authority froze council tax at 2007/08 levels and introduced a recession task force in January to support residents and local businesses.

Chief executive Rob Whiteman said: ‘Barking and Dagenham, like many other boroughs, has been hit by the economic crisis. Elected members are hearing from their constituents about the hardships many families are experiencing caused by the recession.’
