Public sector top brass enjoyed an average pay rise of 12.8% last year, according to a pressure group that campaigns for low taxation.

The second annual Public sector rich list, published by the Taxpayers' Alliance this week, named the 300 top earners in the public sector.

They included Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier, who topped the list with a salary of £1.26m, Network Rail chief executive John Armitt with an £888,000 salary, and Mark Thompson, director general of the BBC, on £788,000. Prime Minister Gordon Brown came in at number 143 on the list, with a salary of £189,000.

A total of 17 people in the public sector earned more than £500,000, and a further 66 more than £250,000.

Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the Taxpayers' Alliance, said: 'Too often, public sector executives are rewarded handsomely even when they fail.

'At a time when the government is rightly aiming to restrain public sector pay increases to 2%, these top officials shouldn't be hiking their pay by six times as much.'
