Ministers have promised to speed up the payment of equipment grants to help elderly and disabled people who live at home, following an independent review.

The Department for Communities and Local Government announced on January 18 that it was willing to make changes to the disabled facilities grant scheme, as recommended in a report by Bristol University.

The review recommended that the process for applying for grants to fund adaptations such as ramps and lifts should be faster and more flexible. A means test for children with disabilities has already been scrapped.

Announcing a three-month consultation on the proposals, housing minister Baroness Andrews said the government wished to meet the increased demand from people who live independently in their own homes.

Next year, the DCLG is paying grants totalling £126m – up by 5% on 2006/07.
