A new chair has been appointed for the Accounts Commission in Scotland, the watchdog that is responsible for the audit of local government.

Professor John Baillie, who has been a member of the commission since 2003, takes over from Alastair MacNish, who has retired after six years in the post.

Baillie is the current chair of the commission's financial audit and assurance committee and is a member of the Audit Scotland board.

A former partner in KPMG, he is a visiting professor of accountancy at Glasgow University and a member of the reporting panel of the Competition Commission.

He was a member of the independent review committee set up by the former Labour-Liberal Democrat administration at the Scottish Executive to investigate the future of local government finance.

Announcing the appointment this week, First Minister Alex Salmond said: 'I'm confident that John Baillie's extensive experience will allow him to deliver the financial stewardship necessary to make sure our services achieve excellence.'
