An extra £5m is to be spent on training sports coaches, construction workers and other staff ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games in east London.

The training package, announced by skills minister David Lammy on October 4, will pay for 188 new sports and leisure apprenticeships so that more coaches are available during the run-up to the games. There will also be 50 apprenticeships in swimming and tennis.

A further programme will help people on Incapacity Benefit to train as assessors in the construction industry. Two hundred extra apprenticeships will be offered in customer services and hospitality.

Speaking at the Building Crafts College next to the Olympic Park site in east London, Lammy said 2012 and its legacy offered a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' for individuals and employers. 'We are determined to assist employers in meeting their skills needs,' he added.

The Learning and Skills Council is spending a further £1m on a pre-volunteer programme that will allow unemployed people to use the games as a stepping stone to permanent jobs.
