Financial management in Welsh central government and the NHS is improving, auditor general Jeremy Colman said this week.

But his report also calls for more effort on controls over grant spending, asset management and payment standards.

'There is no room for complacency,' Colman said. 'Recent structural reforms in Wales place an even greater premium on the availability of sound management information.'

The report covers 65 accounts in central government and the NHS, accounting for expenditure of some £11.9bn financed by the Welsh block budget.

The procurement body Value Wales secured good value for money, the report found, with savings of £18m in 2005.
