Local government ombudsman Tony Redmond topped the poll for the first time in this year's election to the CIPFA Council.

Redmond garnered 1,741 votes to guarantee one of 21 places on the 2005/06 Council. Second place went to Jeff Pipe, corporate governance adviser at Transport for London, and third to Roger Latham, chief executive of Nottinghamshire County Council.

In his candidate statement, Redmond, a regular on the Council since 1995, declared that the proposed consolidation of accountancy bodies was the 'key issue' for the institute. 'I am a strong believer in consolidation from the point of view of the profession and the public perception of accountancy bodies,' Redmond told PF.

Four new members were elected to the Council this year: Sarah Wood, the director of economic policy at the Local Government Association; Ken Barnes, the corporate director of South Norfolk District Council; Lynn Brown, the director of financial services at Glasgow City Council; and Gerald Vinten, the principal of Whitfield College.

Barnes and Vinten have been members of the Council in previous years; Wood and Brown are new faces.

The full council includes seven regional representatives and four officers: Diane Colley, the incoming president; Caroline Gardner, the next vice-president; Mike Barnes, the outgoing president; and Chris Hurford, the institute's treasurer. Up to eight co-options can also be included.

Turnout in this year's election was slightly lower than in 2004 at 24%.
