The British Library has scooped the top prize in the Public Reporting and Accountability Awards organised by CIPFA and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

It was recognised for its 'stylish, informative and imaginatively designed' documents and for a website that can be perused 'with interest and pleasure whether or not you are a bookworm or a bibliophile'.

Speaking at the presentation at this week's CIPFA conference, Guardian journalist and awards' judge David Walker said: 'The library has made an outstanding effort to speak to stakeholders at large, not just academics and library users.'

The awards, now in their fourth year, highlight effective accountability across public services. They reward public bodies that use imagination and originality in their annual reports, documentation and websites.

The British Library also won the category for national organisations with a turnover of more than £50m. Other winners included: Co-ownership Housing; Cambridge & Peterborough Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust; and the Veterans Agency.
