The post office network remains under threat even though thousands of branches have been closed, the National Audit Office has warned.

Post Office Ltd is on course to complete its plan to abandon 2,500 branches under its Urban Reinvention programme, for which the Department of Trade and Industry has provided a £210m subsidy.

But, the NAO says, there is 'uncertainty as to whether the programme will achieve its aim of producing a network that represents a viable business.'

Auditor general Sir John Bourn said: 'Since 1983, the number of post offices has dropped by 7,000 to 15,000. The government faces some difficult decisions if it is to maintain a viable network.'
