Talks on new fees for police surgeons stalled this week as the British Medical Association pushed for a 25% rise backdated to April 2003.

The fees have not risen since April 2002, while consultant and GP pay has increased under their new contracts.

The BMA wants police surgeons' fees increased in line with those of doctors temporarily employed by local authorities. These were increased by 11% in January and they will receive a further 13% from June.
