Many physical education lessons in schools are unsatisfactory and teachers do not know how to test progress, Ofsted says in a report this week.

Most secondary schools have improved the way they teach sport, the inspectors say. But, as London begins preparations to host the 2012 Olympics, too many of Britain's best young prospects are not being stretched.

Ofsted's report looks at the government's strategy, which aims to get 85% of pupils doing at least two hours of exercise a week by 2008.

Chief inspector of schools David Bell said: 'The challenge ahead is to ensure that the benefits felt by these schools [meeting the target] are extended to all schools.'
