The number of people in England in poor housing is falling, according to government figures.

The number of non-decent properties fell from 7.1m to 6.7m between 2001 and 2003, according to a survey published on March 1. Most are owned by private landlords or owner-occupiers.

A total of 1.4 million council and housing association properties failed to meet the fitness standard.

According to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the condition of social housing has improved more rapidly than private sector stock.

The survey shows 35% of social housing as non-decent, compared with 30% of private properties. In 1996, there was a ten-point gap between the two sectors.
