Northern Ireland's Department of Regional Development is to spend £1.5bn by 2015 to improve the province's transport infrastructure.

Half the expenditure will be for road improvements, with most of this providing access to the 'regional gateways' of ports, airports and cross-border roads.

Some £700m will go on improving rail services, and £81m on modernising buses and coaches. Cycleways and footpaths will also be improved.

Regional development minister John Spellar said: 'Proposals include enhanced public transport infrastructure… as well as enhanced walking and cycling provision, all of which would help reduce reliance on private cars.'
