Public sector finance directors looking for the highest salary should head to the NHS or local government, according to a survey published this week.

FDs in large NHS trusts earned £88,727 on average in 2005, the analysis from recruitment consultancy Hays Accountancy & Finance showed. Larger local authorities were next, paying £78,750, while districts and borough councils offered a salary of £63,091.

Central government could manage only £68,042, although pay packets in London could rise to as much as £120,000 to secure the right candidate.

Further education colleges came bottom of the league table, with an average offering of £56,000.

The survey showed that salaries had risen only in line with inflation and that benefits were becoming increasingly important.

'As public sector salaries are not always competitive, it is crucial that public services promote other benefits to attract candidates looking for a better work-life balance,' said Andy Robling, director of Hays Accountancy & Finance Public Services.
