Civil service trade unions have condemned government plans to slash the Learning and Skills Council's workforce by up to a third.

The Public and Commercial Services union led the criticism, claiming the plan would 'wreak havoc' with post-16 learning and skills plans.

The LSC announced on September 16 that it would shed 1,300 jobs across its 48 offices in England by July 2006. It follows 800 LSC job cuts that were announced just 18 months ago and forms part of the government's wider £40bn efficiency agenda.

Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the PCS, which represents 2,000 LSC staff, warned that the cuts would undermine the organisation's ability to administer and distribute its £9bn annual budget effectively, and called on ministers to 'think again.'
