Carol Gilby, who was suspended as chief executive of North East Derbyshire District Council after falling out with the political leadership, is to return to her job after being exonerated by an independent inquiry.

Gilby was instrumental in the downfall of the council's former leader, David Nuttall. In February, he was banned from being a councillor for three years by the Standards Board for 'very serious' breaches of the local government code.

Gilby faced problems with his successors, but has now been cleared of 29 allegations of mismanagement and weak leadership in an investigation by Tim Kerr QC, an employment law specialist appointed by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Kerr has ordered her reinstatement.
