Tony Blair has called for as many individuals and teams as possible to be nominated for the 2005 Public Servants of the Year Awards.

The prime minister contributed the foreword to the awards' prospectus, in which he says the scheme provides 'valued recognition' of public servants.

He writes that the public services are 'better than ever' and offers his 'full support' to the awards. 'It is vital to acknowledge the contribution of all those who are driving forward change and showing innovation and adaptability in meeting their customers' needs. Celebrating their success is important,' the PM states.

The 2005 awards were launched by Public Finance this week. Readers should find a copy of the prospectus and nomination form with this issue of the magazine. As in previous years, the awards are run in partnership with CIPFA, the Cabinet Office and the Office of Government Commerce.

Sir Michael Lyons, the director of Inlogov and deputy chair of the Audit Commission, will remain as chair of the judging panel. He is joined by two new judges this year: Sir Michael Bichard, the rector of the University of the Arts; and Jon Rouse, the chief executive of the Housing Corporation.

The deadline for entries is November 26, 2004 and the ceremony will take place in London on April 21, 2005.
