The government is putting £2.5m into the scheme, the Partners for Study Support programme, for the next two years.

Education and employment minister Malcolm Wicks said: 'The projects will boost children's motivation and build their self-confidence through activities such as writing a community newsletter or taking part in environmental work.'

But perhaps the youngsters will be more interested in other proposed schemes, which include drama productions, recording music and designing fashion outfits.

Other projects include 'promoting engineering as an attractive and dynamic career', learning through street arts and building science exhibits.
